Jerome MageAs the unofficial fan site jeromemage.com claims, Jerome is the most famous person in fashion. Founder and Director of top-notch product design firm magedesign in Los Angeles, Jerome has lived up to his promises to build one of the leading design firms which focus on actions sports and its implications.

After graduating from a well-known design college in Paris, which has been divided soon after into Strate and Creapole, he completed a couple of internships in the US. With his branding and designing abilities it did not take him long to become the Design Director at Spy Optics, the well-known sunglasses brand. Pushing Spy further ahead of its competitors, Jerome eventually started his own design firm, which is now one if not the leading design institution within the sports segment.

Show 006 / Stuart Constantine, Core77.com, NYC, USA

Stuart ConstantineInterestingly, Stuart Constantine has never worked as an industrial designer, although he persued a Master in Design at the Pratt Institute in New York. In fact, even before completing this degree, he received a BA in History from the University of Conneticut. At some point in his career, actually while being at Pratt, he and his co-founder started a project called “Core77″.

You may guess right what happened soon after. They continued working on core77.com and added feature after feature. Eventually, they created coroflot.com, the famous design related portfolio and job site, which hosts currently more than 64 000 online portfolios. Over time Core77.com has become a media portal and publishing company, and in fact, the website is the major player in the ID field.

Show 005 / Sozo Design San Francisco, USA

Sozo DesignWe actually got in contact by incident through a fellow from the Department of Art and Design, University of Essen. However, it was quite nice and encouraging to talk to the folks from Sozo Design (sozodesign.com) in San Francisco’s bay area. David Gonzalez and Bruce Eng happened to study on the east and west coast, bringing their talent together as an off-shoot of Design Continuum.

They are combining their diverse skills in order to create distinguished products and services which extend current markets, create new markets or innovate existing ones. They work for firms like Samsung, Intel, or Kensington. Please checkout their website at sozodesign.com.

Show 004 // Cees de Bont / Dean of IDE at Delft University, Delft, NL

Cees de BontWe will start with a series of shows with deans and departments heads of design and business schools, from Europe, North America and Asia. Today we will feature Cees de Bont, Head of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology on todays interview. Delft is listed in the business week top 60 list of the world best design schools.

Mr de Bont persued a master degree in economic psychology and a PH.D in Industrial Design. After essential key roles at Philips Design, a major corporate player in the design field, he eventually was given an offer to become Dean of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University. We will talk about his interesting career path, how people and customers tick, and essentially about the industrial design program in Delft.

Show 003 // Myk Lum / Lum Design Associates, Irvine, USA

Myk LumHe is the founder of Lum Design Associates, the creators of the design language for brands like Simplehuman. They are working for clients like JBL or Infinity. He started initially with a minor in architecture. Though he was not feeling comfortable with the mechanical and engineering part of studying architecture, he switched over to industrial design and discovered that the design approach at the university of Long Beach is not necessarily less like the nuts and bolts approach in architecture. However, he completed his degree while working on a freelance basis for a few clients and studios.

Despite a small job offer he was actually forced to seek out independent clients and start doing freelance work on a daily basis. While discovering certain health issues due to heavy work without vacation or rest at all, he started hiring employees. And so goes the story about Lum Design…

Show 002 // Paul Wylde / Imagination, NYC, USA

Paul WyldePaul has experienced an unusual career path. He has been studying at Ravensborne College of Art and Communication in Kent before completing a design master degree at the Glasgow School of Art. After doing a product design internship at frog design in California he returned to Britain and became creative director for the Nest, a brand consultancy. Interbrand and British Airways have been a stepstone in his career.

After a 5 year stay at British Airways as a Brand Manager he moved on to BMW DesignworksUSA in Los Angeles, where he worked on BMW Group branding projects. Eventually he got head hunted and moved to New York in order to fill the position of the new creative director at Imagination.

Chuck PellyChuck Pelly, a 40-year veteran of the design industry, is the founder of DesignworksUSA, a BMW sub-sidiary, and is also the cofounder of The Design Academy Inc., a multidisciplinary consulting group. DesignworksUSA is one of the top 10 design consultancies in the world and has won numerous awards for innovative design solutions, being instrumental in the design of the BMW X5, the Z4 and the award-winning BMW 3 series.

He has received over 50 awards of distinction, including the “Eyes on Design Lifetime Achievement Award “for car design, and has been nominated twice for the “Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence, Innovation and Enhancement” of the quality of life by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
